Working From Home During the London Plague, Newton Discovered The Theory of Gravity

Isaac Newton was 20 years old when 'The Great Plague' hit London. He had not earned the title "sir" and was not wearing a big white formal wig. Newton was just a student at Trinity College Cambridge, London.

Newton received his bachelor's degree from Trinity in January 1665 just as the plague descended on London. Cambridge University closed on 7 August 1665 and encouraged its resident scholars to flee to the less densely populated countryside.

Newton returned to his family's farm at Woolsthrope Manor until the University reopened in late 1666. That's when Newton gave up his genius, wrote the biographer Philip Steele.

This period became Newton's productive period in the development of optics and light, calculus, and the laws of motion and gravity. Referring to John Dryden's Annus Mirabilis, those years were a miracle.

Being at home didn't seem to make Newton out of his mind. Newton tries to solve math problems from college. The paper he wrote was predicted to be the forerunner of the calculus we know today.

It was at this time that Newton got to the prism and experimented in his room. It even made a small hole in the window that produced tiny rays of light into the room. From here he thought of developing the science of optics and light.

Right outside the window of her Woolsthrope house is an apple tree. It was the tree that became the legend of Newton's theory of gravity when the apples fell on his head.

Although many think that the story is apocryphal (its authenticity is doubtful). John Conduitt's notes confirm that there is an element of truth to the story. Assistant Newton's expression is quoted in The Washington Post as follows.

“… While he was contemplating in the garden, it occurred to him that the power of gravity (which makes an apple fall from a tree to the ground) is not limited to a certain distance from the earth. But it extends further. "Why not as tall as the Moon?" said Newton to himself.

The Great Plague in London, is an epidemic that lasted from 1665 to 1666. City records in the Britannica show that around 68,596 people died from the plague. Although the actual death toll is estimated to exceed 100,000 people.

This outbreak was caused by Yersinia pestis, a bacteria associated with previous outbreaks. It originated on the outskirts of London, St. Giles-in-the-Fields and other places where many densely populated areas are predominantly poor.

Then the suspicion arose in the winter of 1664 which did not spread intensively until the spring of 1665. Because of this, King Charles II and the court fled London in early summer and did not return until the following February.

The mortality rate decreased from December 1665 to early 1666. Until 1667 there had been no epidemic anywhere in England.

The plague's disappearance from London has been linked to the Great Fire of London of September 1666. Many say that this led to the decline in plague cases. But that decline is also ascribed to effective quarantines.

Sir Isaac Newton has been credited as having contributed more than any other individual in history to the development of modern science.

Newton's most significant contributions to physics and astronomy were in his major work "Philosophia Naturalis Principia Mathematica" which he published in 1687 at his own expense.

It contains the principle of universal gravity, which explains the motion of celestial bodies and the fall of objects on earth. Principia describes Newton's laws of motion, namely fluid mechanics, slow motion and its satellites, comet motion, and tidal phenomena.

In 1704, he also published another influential work called the Opticks which detailed the revolutionary experiments he had carried out on the properties of light in endemic times. Until 1705, Queen Anne bestowed Knighthood on Isaac Newton.

Sir Isaac Newton died in Kensington, London on March 31, 1727, and was buried at Westminster Abbey. Several names of discoveries were given to honor Newton's figure.

Such as the asteroids 8000 Isaac Newton and 662 Newtonia. As well as the asteroid 2653 Principa which commemorates his monumental treatise, Philosophia Naturalis Principia Mathematica.
