Shakespeare lived his whole life under the shadow of the bubonic plague. On April 26, 1564, in the parish register of Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon, John Bretchgirdle, recorded the baptism of a man named "Gulielmus filius Johannes Shakspere."
Several months later on the same list, the vicar recorded the death of Oliver Gunne, a weaver. He wrote down the words "hic incipit pestis", which means "here begins the plague".
In those years the epidemic claimed the lives of about a fifth of London's population. Fortunately, the life of a baby named William Shakespeare and his family was saved.
Such a plague does not rage forever. With the help of strict quarantine and climate change, the epidemic is slowly easing, as happened in Stratford. Life was back to normal.
However, over the years, in cities and towns around the world, the bubonic plague will return. It usually appears with little or no warning, and is, unfortunately, highly contagious.
The victim will wake up with fever and chills. Feeling very weak or tired, diarrhea, vomiting, bleeding from the mouth, nose or rectum. Also, signs of bubbling or swollen lymph nodes in the groin or armpits. Death almost certainly followed.
Shakespeare had to wrestle his entire career with severe disease outbreaks throughout 1582, 1592-93, 1603-04, 1606, and 1608-09.
Theater historian J. Leeds Barroll III in The New Yorker magazine, reveals that between 1606 and 1610 the London theater did not open for more than nine months. And it was during this period that Shakespeare wrote and produced some of his famous plays from Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, The Winter's Tale, and The Tempest.
However, there is an interesting point. In his plays and poetry, Shakespeare almost never directly reveals the presence of the plague. Like Thomas Nashe, contemporary writer, made A Litany in Time of Plague.
In Shakespeare's work, epidemic disease occurs largely in the speeches of the characters in metaphorical expressions of anger and disgust. The metaphor of the plague appears throughout Shakespeare's work in colloquial form.
The plague was accepted as an inevitable part of life. Plague also appears in the form of comic effects, such as when Beatrice made fun of Benedict in a work titled Much Ado About Nothing:
"Oh my God! He's going to hang him like a disease. He's caught faster than the plague, and the thief is running crazy now. God help your highness Claudio. If he had caught Benedict, it would have cost him a thousand pounds before he was cured."

The plague as an actual event only stands out in one of Shakespeare's plays. Friar Laurence, in Romeo and Juliet, has asked a fellow monk to deliver an urgent message to Romeo in exile in Mantua, informing him of a clever drug that will make Juliet appear dead. In a few lines, the courier conveys a lot of information, much more than necessary for plot requirements:
Will find barefoot brothers out,
One of our orders, to hook me up,
Here in this town visiting the sick,
And find it, city seekers,
Suspect that the two of us are at home
Where the contagious plague does rule,
Close the door and won't let us out,
So that my speed to Mantua remains.
Shakespeare appears to have shared Nashe's skepticism that there would be a medical solution to the plague. And from what we know about the science of his time, this pessimism is justified.
He focused his attention on a different plague, one ruled by a leader who was tenacious, morally bankrupt, incompetent, covered in blood, and ultimately self-destructive.
